Portrait
In portraiture, I am drawn to presence rather than performance. The sitter is observed through proportion, structure, light and restrained expression.
Contemporary Realist Painter
For Vahid Alipour Asl, painting begins with direct observation — with the act of looking carefully at form, light, color, proportion and the relationships that give an image its visual presence.
“The act of seeing, selecting, composing and painting can itself be the artistic statement.”
My practice begins with the observed world. I am interested in what happens when sustained attention transforms seeing into painting.
I approach the visible world without imposing a predetermined narrative upon it. Before interpretation comes observation: the relationship between one form and another, the movement of light across a surface, the balance of color, and the structure of the composition.
Painting begins in these decisions — what to include, what to leave out, where to place emphasis, and how to translate the experience of seeing into the language of paint.
Realism provides the foundation of my practice, but faithful representation is not the final objective. The painted image has its own structure, rhythm and visual logic.
Through drawing, proportion, color relationships, controlled brushwork and composition, I seek to preserve the integrity of the observed subject while allowing the painting to exist as an independent visual experience.

Still life allows careful attention to objects, surfaces, color relationships, material and the organization of visual space.
Landscape offers a different form of observation, shaped by changing light, atmosphere, distance and the visual character of place.
Light is one of the principal forces that organizes my paintings. It defines form, establishes depth, creates relationships between surfaces and determines where the eye is drawn.
Color operates in the same way. I am interested not only in individual colors, but in their relationships — temperature, value, saturation and the way one color changes in the presence of another.
The sustained act of looking forms the beginning of the work.
Visual relationships are selected and organized into a coherent painted structure.
Proportion, volume and structure give the observed subject physical presence.
Controlled but visible brushwork preserves both precision and the material character of paint.
Light organizes space, reveals form and directs visual attention.
Color relationships establish atmosphere, balance and visual unity.
I do not believe every painting needs to conceal a message behind the image. The act of seeing, selecting, composing and painting can itself carry meaning.
My aim is to allow the observed subject to retain its integrity while exploring what painting can do with it — how reality can be transformed through visual decisions without becoming detached from what was actually seen.
For me, the act of seeing is not merely the beginning of painting. It is the practice itself.
